Listen to the voices of water!

In July 2010 the water rights movement made a historical accomplishment with the United Nations' recognition of the human right to water and proper sanitation. The World Water Council, which claims to embody the voice of water, should celebrate this event which gives all the sense and the significance of action for water. They could organize a large international event to inspire mobilization in favour of water.

What?
The World Water Council is organizing a World Water Forum in Marseilles in 2012?
What a golden opportunity. So the right to water and sanitation will be explored?
… without conviction!

The "voice of water" has never done anything in favour of recognizing the right to water. At the last World Water Forum in Istanbul in 2009, it missed the opportunity despite the fact that the request was already brought forward by about 20 countries. The fact that the World Water Forum stands for the alliance of the water multinationals and the most powerful countries could explain that...

The next World Water Forum presents itself as a "Forum for solutions" as usual. These solutions are about making water more expensive and about having more paying customers. The issues should be about guaranteeing access to water and sanitation services. Of course, there is still a lot to do in order to make this access possible, even in France! To make prices affordable for ordinary people. But the right to water is not only about consumption! It is about the preserving the resource, which is massively polluted. It is the right to a clean environment. It is a heritage. It is a social organization which is being dissolved by market forces.

Different voices are being heard when it comes to water issues. They are diverse and lower in volume. They will perhaps whisper like water. But if you lend an ear, you'll hear them in Marseilles at the Alternative World Water Forum.
